Motorola has just launched the Moto G (third generation) in India, and has priced it starting at Rs 11,999. It will be available exclusively on Flipkart from midnight. We compare the Moto G (third generation) against its predecessor, the Moto G (second generation), to find out what’s new.

Price and availability

The price of the Moto G (third generation) is at Rs 11,999 for its 8GB variant, and the 16GB variant is priced at Rs 12,999. In comparison, the Moto G (second generation) 8GB was launched with a price tag of Rs 12,999. Both the predecessor and the newly launched Moto G are exclusive to Flipkart only.

Size and Weight

The new Moto G is a bit heavy at 155 grams, compared to the predecessor which weighs 149 grams. The new Moto G has thickened slightly at 11.6mm, while the second gen smartphone comes with 11mm thickness.

Display

The new Moto G comes with a 5-inch 720p HD (1280 x 720) display with pixel density at 294 ppi, just like its predecessor. It also comes with similar Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Processor

The smartphone upgrades to a Snapdragon 410 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz paired with 1GB and 2GB RAM (for 8GB and 16GB respectively). In comparison, the second-gen Moto G has a Snapdragon 400 chipset paired with 1GB RAM.

Storage

For the first time, Motorola has announced two storage variants for the Moto G (third generation). It will come with 8GB and 16GB storage variants, with micro SD slot for further 32GB expansion. The Moto G (second generation) only came with an 8GB storage option, with a microSD slot of course.

Camera

The camera also sees a boost with the new Moto G, which sports a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing sensor. The Moto G (second generation) on the other hand, has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera.

Battery

The new Moto G has a slightly larger 2,470mAh battery, which the company claims lasts up to 24 hours of mixed usage. The second-gen smartphone has a 2,070mAh battery in comparison.

Software

While the second gen Moto G comes with Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box, it has already received the Android Lollipop update via OTA.The new Moto G comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box.
